About India's Expressway Network
India's expressway program is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country. Unlike regular national highways, expressways are fully access-controlled with no intersections, traffic lights, or speed breakers. They feature grade-separated interchanges, service roads, and dedicated lanes for high-speed travel.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and various state governments are developing expressways across the country. The Bharatmala Pariyojana, a centrally-sponsored highway development programme, has been a key driver behind the recent surge in expressway construction.
India's first expressway was the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, opened in 2002. Since then, the network has grown rapidly, with marquee projects like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (1,386 km — India's longest), Samruddhi Mahamarg (701 km), Purvanchal Expressway (341 km), and the upcoming Ganga Expressway (594 km) transforming inter-city connectivity.
Expressways typically have speed limits of 100-120 km/h and are equipped with modern safety features like reflective road markings, crash barriers, emergency call boxes, and highway patrol. Most charge toll based on distance, and many support FASTag electronic toll collection.
