What the Law Says
Section 122 MV Act: No person shall cause or allow a motor vehicle to remain stationary in a public place in a manner causing or likely to cause danger, obstruction, or undue inconvenience to other users of the public place. CMVR Rule 3 and state traffic regulations specify exact prohibited locations. Police may have vehicles towed and charge release fees.
💡 Why This Rule Exists
Illegal parking is one of the most pervasive traffic problems in Indian cities. It reduces effective road width, blocks sightlines at intersections, prevents emergency vehicles from reaching hydrants, and forces pedestrians and cyclists onto the road. An estimated 30–40% of urban traffic slowdowns are attributable to illegal parking narrowing roads.
