What the Law Says

CMVR Rule 22 requires that before making any turn, changing direction, slowing down, or stopping, the driver must give an adequate signal using the mechanical indicator or, if not fitted, by hand. Signals must be given in sufficient time to allow other road users to react. The prescribed hand signals are: left arm extended horizontally (left turn), right arm extended horizontally (right turn), left arm extended downward (slowing/stopping).

💡 Why This Rule Exists

Indicators are the primary communication channel between drivers. Without them, every turn, lane change, and stop is a surprise to the vehicles behind and alongside. Rear-end collisions, side-swipes, and intersection crashes are significantly caused by failure to signal. Motorcyclists and cyclists are disproportionately harmed by unsignalled turns from vehicles ahead of them.

Key Facts

  • 1

Indicators must be used before: every turn, every lane change, every overtake, and every stop.

  • 2

Signal early — at least 30 metres before a turn in urban areas, 100+ metres on highways.

  • 3

If your indicators are not working, use hand signals.

  • 4

Hazard lights (both indicators simultaneously) are used when stopped or moving slowly in an emergency — not for parking.

  • 5

Flashing hazard lights while parked illegally does not make the parking legal.

⚠️ Common Violations

  • Turning without indicating — especially at market crossings and residential junctions.

  • Changing lanes on highways without checking mirrors or indicating.

  • Using hazard lights continuously while driving in rain instead of driving slower.

  • Not cancelling indicators after completing a turn.
