Never Drive Drunk or Drugged

Alcohol does not make you a better driver. It makes you think you are.

13xhigher crash risk at the legal BAC limit

Alcohol is involved in approximately 4.5% of all road accidents in India, but those accidents are disproportionately fatal. Drunk driving is not a victimless crime โ€” it is a decision to operate a deadly machine with deliberately impaired faculties, risking the lives of everyone on the road.

Why This Matters

Alcohol impairs every cognitive and physical process required for safe driving: reaction time slows by 15โ€“20%, peripheral vision narrows, depth perception becomes inaccurate, and โ€” critically โ€” the driver's self-assessment becomes dangerously optimistic. The brain's frontal lobe, responsible for judgement and impulse control, is the first to be impaired. Drunk drivers genuinely believe they are driving normally while executing turns badly, misjudging gaps, and missing hazards entirely.

What Alcohol Does to Your Driving Ability

Even at blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) below the legal limit, impairment begins. At 0.02% BAC (one standard drink): reduced ability to multitask and track moving objects. At 0.05%: reduced coordination, difficulty steering, reduced response to emergencies. At 0.08% (India's legal limit for criminal prosecution): clearly compromised muscle coordination, slowed reaction time, and reduced ability to detect danger. At 0.10%+: slurred speech, poor coordination, significantly slower reactions.

India's Legal Framework

Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act sets the legal blood alcohol limit at 30 mg per 100 ml of blood (0.03%) โ€” stricter than many countries. A breathalyser test is admissible as legal evidence. First offence: โ‚น10,000 fine or 6 months imprisonment, or both. Second offence within 3 years: โ‚น15,000 fine or 2 years imprisonment, or both. Professional drivers (commercial licence holders) face stricter rules โ€” any detectable alcohol can result in licence cancellation.

Night Drives, Parties, and the "I'm Fine" Lie

The most dangerous drunk driving hours in India are between 10 PM and 4 AM โ€” late night to early morning when traffic enforcement is lower and alcohol consumption from events is highest. The decision to drive is made precisely when judgement is most impaired. "I only had two drinks" is the most dangerous sentence in road safety. Two standard drinks raises BAC to approximately 0.04โ€“0.06% in most adults โ€” above India's legal limit and clinically impairing.

Alternatives That Actually Work

In India's current ecosystem, there is no reason to drink and drive. Ola, Uber, Rapido, and auto-rickshaws are available 24 hours in every major city. Designated driver services operate in metro areas. Overnight hotel stays near venues eliminate the problem entirely. The cost of any of these alternatives is a fraction of the fine, the potential lawsuit, the insurance implications, and the irreversible cost if someone is killed.

Quick Tips

  • โœ“Plan ahead โ€” arrange a designated driver or cab before you start drinking
  • โœ“Never let a drunk friend drive โ€” take their keys; you may save their life
  • โœ“Remember that sleep does not sober you up โ€” time is the only thing that reduces BAC
  • โœ“Coffee, food, and cold water do not reduce BAC โ€” only time does
  • โœ“Drugs (prescription and otherwise) can impair driving as severely as alcohol
  • โœ“If you see a drunk driver on the road, keep your distance and report to police
