LMV, HMV, MCWG, Transport — which licence do you need? Complete breakdown of all DL categories.
India has multiple categories of driving licences, each authorising you to drive a specific class of vehicle. Driving a vehicle class not endorsed on your licence is treated as driving without a licence — ₹5,000 fine.

Licence Categories
The following vehicle classes are endorsed on Indian driving licences:
- ›MC 50CC — Motorcycle up to 50cc (gearless). Minimum age: 16.
- ›MCWG — Motorcycle Without Gear (gearless scooter/moped, any cc). Minimum age: 18.
- ›MCWOG — Motorcycle With Gear (geared motorcycle). Minimum age: 18.
- ›LMV — Light Motor Vehicle (car, jeep, van up to 7,500 kg GVW). Minimum age: 18.
- ›LMV-NT — LMV Non-Transport (private use only).
- ›LMV-T — LMV Transport (taxi, goods vehicle up to 7,500 kg). Minimum age: 18.
- ›HMV — Heavy Motor Vehicle / HTV — Heavy Transport Vehicle (truck, bus above 7,500 kg). Minimum age: 20, requires 1 year LTV experience.
- ›HGMV — Heavy Goods Motor Vehicle (trucks specifically).
- ›HPMV — Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicle (buses specifically).
- ›Trailer — Tractor-trailer combinations. Separate endorsement required.
Learner's Licence vs Permanent Licence
Before getting a permanent DL, you must first obtain a Learner's Licence (LL):
- ›Learner's Licence: valid for 6 months. Apply online via Parivahan portal.
- ›Test: computerised multiple-choice test on traffic rules and signs.
- ›After 30 days of holding the LL, you can apply for the permanent DL test.
- ›Permanent DL test: practical driving test at the RTO.
- ›DL validity: 20 years or until age 50, whichever is earlier. After 50: renewed every 5 years.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
If you plan to drive abroad, you need an IDP — which is essentially a multi-language translation of your Indian DL. Apply at your RTO with your valid DL, passport, and photos. Valid for 1 year.
How to Apply for a Driving Licence
The process has been largely digitised:
- ›1. Apply for Learner's Licence on parivahan.gov.in or visit your RTO.
- ›2. Submit documents: age proof, address proof, passport-size photos, medical certificate (Form 1A).
- ›3. Pass the LL test (computerised, 15 questions).
- ›4. Wait 30 days (mandatory gap between LL and DL test).
- ›5. Book a DL test slot on the Parivahan portal.
- ›6. Pass the practical driving test at the RTO testing track.
- ›7. DL is dispatched by post — typically within 7–15 days.
Common Mistakes
Avoid these common errors:
- ›Driving a geared motorcycle with only an MCWG (gearless) endorsement — this is technically driving without a valid licence.
- ›Driving a commercial vehicle with only an LMV-NT licence — you need LMV-T or HTV.
- ›Not renewing DL on time — driving with an expired DL is the same as driving without one.
- ›Not getting the vehicle class endorsed when you buy a new type of vehicle.
