🅿️ Parking Rules

Stopping and Emergency Parking on Highways

Never stop on the carriageway of a highway. Use the hard shoulder with hazard lights and warning triangles.

A vehicle stopped on a highway carriageway is one of the most dangerous situations in traffic. If you must stop, use the hard shoulder, activate hazard lights immediately, and place warning triangles 50–100 metres behind the vehicle.

⚖️

Penalty Under Law

₹500–₹1,000 for stopping on highway. Criminal liability if a stopped vehicle causes an accident.

Legal Source

MV Act Sec. 119; NHAI Guidelines; CMVR Rule 104 (warning triangle)

What the Law Says

CMVR Rule 104: Every motor vehicle used for transport must carry two warning triangles (reflective). NHAI guidelines require that in case of breakdown, the vehicle must be moved off the carriageway to the hard shoulder if at all possible. Hazard lights must be activated. Warning triangles must be placed at 50 metres (urban) and 150 metres (highway) behind the vehicle. Other vehicles must not stop alongside a broken-down vehicle — this creates a second obstruction.

💡 Why This Rule Exists

Vehicles stopped on highways are struck from behind at full highway speed. The stopping vehicle is not visible until a driver is close — at 100 km/h, the distance to stop is 60+ metres, leaving very little time to react to an unexpected stationary vehicle. This is the cause of multiple pile-up accidents in India, particularly at night and in fog.

Key Facts

  • 1

Hard shoulder: the unpaved area to the left of the carriageway. Use for emergency stops only.

  • 2

Place warning triangles: 50m behind in urban, 150m behind on highways.

  • 3

Activate hazard lights immediately on stopping.

  • 4

Do not stand between your vehicle and approaching traffic.

  • 5

Call for help via: NHAI 1033, police 112, or breakdown service.

  • 6

If breakdown is at a tunnel entrance: follow tunnel-specific emergency procedures.

⚠️ Common Violations

  • Stopping on the carriageway to check a map or answer a call.

  • Stopping multiple vehicles alongside each other (creating a lane-wide blockage).

  • Not placing warning triangles after a breakdown.
