No U-Turn
Mandatory Signs

No U-Turn Sign

Shape: Circular (octagonal for Stop, inverted triangle for Give Way)  ·  Colour: White with red border (prohibitory); blue with white symbol (positive mandatory, e.g. compulsory turn, keep left)

Making a U-turn to reverse your direction of travel is prohibited here.

What It Means

The No U-Turn sign is critical on high-speed roads and divided highways where a vehicle turning back against traffic flow creates severe collision risk. U-turns require significant road width and time — on busy roads, the gap in traffic needed is rarely available safely. Illegal U-turns are a major cause of broadside and head-on crashes in India.

📍 Where You'll See It

On busy arterial roads, expressways, undivided highways near curves or crests, near signals, and in designated one-way zones.

What You Must Do

Continue to the next legal U-turn point or intersection. Plan your route to avoid needing a U-turn.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Making a U-turn when no traffic is "visible" — other vehicles approaching from a distance or cresting a hill cannot see a turning vehicle in time.

⚖️ Legal Note

Violation: Sec. 119 / 177 MV Act. Fine: ₹500. If the U-turn caused an obstruction or accident: Sec. 184, fine up to ₹5,000.
