Give Way Sign

Shape: Circular (octagonal for Stop, inverted triangle for Give Way)  ·  Colour: White with red border (prohibitory); blue with white symbol (positive mandatory, e.g. compulsory turn, keep left)

Yield to all vehicles and pedestrians on the road you are entering.

What It Means

The Give Way sign is an inverted red-bordered triangle — the only inverted triangle sign in India, making it unmistakable. It requires you to slow down and be prepared to stop to let traffic on the main road pass. Unlike a Stop sign, you do not have to stop if the way is clearly free. The key difference: Stop means always stop; Give Way means stop only if necessary.

📍 Where You'll See It

At T-junctions, roundabout entries, slip roads, and side streets merging into main roads.

What You Must Do

Reduce speed significantly. If traffic is present on the main road, stop and wait. Enter only when the way is completely clear.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Confusing this with a Stop sign and either ignoring it entirely or assuming you must always stop. You must always yield — stop only when traffic is present.

⚖️ Legal Note

Violation: Sec. 119 / 177 MV Act. Failure to give way causing an accident attracts Sec. 184 (dangerous driving) with fines up to ₹5,000.
