Pedestrian Crossing Sign
Shape: Equilateral triangle (pointing up) · Colour: Yellow/white with red border
A pedestrian crossing (zebra crossing) is ahead. Pedestrians have right of way.
What It Means
India's Motor Vehicles Act gives pedestrians the right of way at designated crossings. However, this is one of the most widely disregarded rules in the country. Pedestrian fatalities at and near crossings account for a significant portion of urban road deaths. The cautionary sign warns you to expect pedestrians stepping onto the road ahead.
📍 Where You'll See It
50–100 metres before a zebra crossing on a road without traffic signals.
✅ What You Must Do
Slow down. If a pedestrian is waiting at or on the crossing, stop and let them cross. Do not honk at pedestrians on a crossing.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Squeezing past a crossing pedestrian. If a pedestrian has stepped onto the crossing, you must stop — not slow and pass behind them.
⚖️ Legal Note
Failure to yield to pedestrian at crossing: Sec. 177 MV Act. Fine: ₹500. Injury to pedestrian: Sec. 184 + IPC/BNS provisions.
