What the Law Says
The Motor Vehicles Amendment Act 2019 extended the seatbelt requirement to rear passengers in addition to the driver and front-seat passenger. The fine applies per occupant not wearing a seatbelt. Children under 4 years must be secured in a child safety seat. Children between 4–14 years must wear a seatbelt. Seatbelts reduce the risk of death in a frontal crash by 45–50% for front occupants and 25% for rear occupants.
