What the Law Says
CMVR Rule 3 requires that a vehicle making a U-turn must not obstruct or endanger other road users. Where a "No U-Turn" sign is erected (IRC:67), U-turns are strictly prohibited. On divided highways, U-turns are only permitted at designated openings in the median. Making a U-turn near a blind curve, hill crest, or intersection is considered dangerous driving under Sec. 184.
💡 Why This Rule Exists
A U-turn requires a vehicle to cross the path of oncoming traffic — one of the highest-risk manoeuvres. On highways, U-turns at non-designated points are a major cause of head-on collisions because oncoming vehicles do not expect a vehicle to be stationary or turning across their lane at high speed.
