What the Law Says

NHAI Circular (Feb 2021): All lanes at NHAI toll plazas are FASTag lanes. Vehicles without a valid, functional FASTag must pay double the toll. NH Fee Rules 2008 prescribe toll rates by vehicle class and distance. Certain vehicles are exempt: military vehicles, fire tenders, ambulances, and vehicles of specified dignitaries.

💡 Why This Rule Exists

Before FASTag, Indian toll plazas caused massive traffic jams — queues of 1–5 km at peak times. The average waiting time was 8–12 minutes per toll. FASTag reduces transaction time to 3–4 seconds, saving fuel, reducing emissions, and preventing the accidents caused by sudden braking in toll queues. It also reduces corruption by making toll collection digital and auditable.
