Rules for Reversing a Vehicle

Reversing on a public road must be done with extreme caution. Never reverse onto a main road from a side road.

You may reverse only when it is safe, for the shortest distance necessary, and after checking that the path behind is clear. Reversing onto a main road from a side road is prohibited.

⚖️

Penalty Under Law

₹500 (Sec. 177). If accident caused while reversing: Sec. 184 + IPC/BNS.

Legal Source

CMVR Rule 3; MV Act Sec. 119, 184

What the Law Says

CMVR Rule 3 allows reversing only when it can be done safely without causing inconvenience or danger. The driver must look behind, use mirrors, and if visibility is limited, have someone guide them. Reversing onto a main road from a side road — forcing traffic on the main road to stop — is a violation. On one-way streets, reversing against the traffic direction is effectively wrong-side driving.

💡 Why This Rule Exists

Rear visibility is severely limited in most vehicles, especially trucks and buses. Children, pedestrians, cyclists, and parked vehicles are easily missed. Reversing accidents cause a disproportionate number of child fatalities in parking areas and residential colonies.

Key Facts

  • 1

Check all mirrors and blind spots before reversing.

  • 2

Use a spotter (someone guiding from outside) when visibility is poor.

  • 3

Sound your horn or use a reverse warning buzzer.

  • 4

Reverse slowly — walking speed is the maximum safe speed.

  • 5

Never reverse on a highway or expressway.

  • 6

Many new vehicles now require reverse cameras (CMVR amendment 2022).

⚠️ Common Violations

  • Reversing out of a parking spot without checking.

  • Reversing on a highway to reach a missed exit.

  • Trucks reversing without a spotter in busy areas.
