International Driving Permit (IDP) Rules
Foreign nationals need an IDP or a valid Indian DL to drive in India. Indians driving abroad need an IDP.
India is a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention. An International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in a convention country is valid in India for 1 year. Indians can obtain an IDP from their RTO for driving abroad. An IDP is not a standalone document — you must carry your original DL with it.
Penalty Under Law
Driving without valid licence/IDP: Sec. 181 — ₹5,000.

What the Law Says
Section 3 MV Act recognises driving licences issued in convention countries (Geneva/Vienna conventions). A foreign visitor with a valid IDP may drive in India for up to 1 year from the date of entry. The IDP must be accompanied by the original national driving licence. For longer stays, a local Indian DL must be obtained. Indians applying for an IDP must hold a valid Indian DL — the IDP is a translation document, not a separate licence.
💡 Why This Rule Exists
International driving permits facilitate cross-border travel by providing a standardised, multi-language translation of a driver's licence. Without an IDP, a foreign driving licence (in, say, Japanese or Arabic) cannot be read or verified by Indian traffic police.
