Driving Through Construction and Work Zones
Reduce speed, follow temporary signs, and watch for workers and equipment on the road.
In construction zones, temporary speed limits, lane diversions, and warning signs override normal road rules. You must slow down, follow temporary cones and barriers, and watch for workers, equipment, and uneven road surfaces.
Penalty Under Law
₹500 (Sec. 177). Hitting a worker in a work zone: Sec. 184 + IPC/BNS.

What the Law Says
Section 119 MV Act: All traffic signs — including temporary construction zone signs — are legally binding. Temporary speed limits posted in work zones must be obeyed. NHAI Work Zone Guidelines specify: advance warning signs at 200m, 100m, and at the zone boundary; lane merge signs; speed limit reduction; and a "Work Zone Ends" sign at the exit.
💡 Why This Rule Exists
Road construction workers are among the most vulnerable people on the road — they have no protection from passing vehicles. Work zones also create unexpected hazards: narrow lanes, uneven surfaces, loose gravel, and sudden diversions. Maintaining normal highway speed through a work zone dramatically increases collision risk.
Key Facts
- 1
Orange/amber signs indicate construction zone — legally binding.
- 2
Temporary speed limit: typically 40–60 km/h in work zones.
- 3
Follow cones and barriers — do not deviate from the marked path.
- 4
Expect sudden lane merges — be ready to yield.
- 5
Road surface may be uneven, loose, or missing entirely.
- 6
Workers may be on the road — reduce speed even if you don't see a speed limit sign.

At night: work zones should have reflective cones and flashing lights — report if missing.
