BH series makes sense

  • Your job posts you across States — defence, All-India Services, transferable government or PSU roles.
  • You expect to move at least once during the life of the vehicle.
  • You want a lower upfront outgo at purchase rather than one large lifetime payment.
  • You value never dealing with an NOC, re-registration, or a road-tax refund claim.

Normal registration makes sense

  • You are eligible on paper but realistically expect to stay in one State.
  • Your State charges comparatively low lifetime road tax.
  • You would rather pay once and never track a renewal date again.
  • You want a specific or fancy registration number.
  • The vehicle is commercial, which rules out BH entirely.

The comparison we deliberately do not make

You will find sites quoting a single “BH is ₹X cheaper” figure. That number cannot be stated generally: lifetime road tax is set by each State and varies widely by State, vehicle price, fuel type and age, so whether BH costs more or less depends entirely on which State you would otherwise register in. Compare the Rule 51B slabs against your own State’s lifetime tax before deciding, and treat the figure computed by the Vahan portal as authoritative.

Full eligibility rules, the Rule 51B tax slabs, application steps and how to convert an existing registration are covered on the main guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BH series cheaper than normal registration?
Not as a general rule. BH spreads payment across two-year blocks instead of one lifetime payment, so the upfront cost is lower, but the total paid over the life of the vehicle can be higher — particularly in States where lifetime road tax is comparatively low. Because each State sets its own lifetime tax, the answer depends on which State you would otherwise register in.
Can I switch from normal registration to BH later?
Yes. G.S.R. 879(E) dated 14 December 2022 permits a vehicle holding a regular registration mark to be converted to a BH mark on payment of the requisite tax. This was not allowed when the scheme launched in 2021, and it mainly helps owners who became eligible after buying the vehicle.
What happens to a BH vehicle if I leave a qualifying job?
The registration mark itself does not lapse. The 2022 amendment also facilitated transfer of a BH-marked vehicle to buyers who are either eligible or ineligible for the series. Because tax treatment on such changes is handled case by case, confirm your position with your registering authority rather than assuming.
Does BH series avoid re-registration when I move?
Yes — that is the entire purpose. Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 requires a vehicle kept in another State for more than twelve months to be assigned a new registration mark there. A BH mark is valid across India, so relocation triggers no registration formality, no NOC, and no refund claim.
Can I get a fancy number on BH series?
No. BH registration marks are generated randomly through the portal after eligibility is verified. Fancy and reserved number booking, which most States offer on normal registration, is not available under the BH series.
