What the Law Says
Section 147 Railways Act 1989: A person who disobeys a signal at a level crossing, or passes through a closed gate, shall be punishable with imprisonment up to 1 year and/or fine. Section 131 MV Act: Drivers must stop vehicles at railway level crossings when directed. At unmanned crossings, the driver must stop, check both directions for trains, and cross only when safe.
💡 Why This Rule Exists
A train travelling at 80–130 km/h has a stopping distance of 1–2 km. When a vehicle is on the tracks, the train has no ability to stop in time. Level crossing accidents in India kill hundreds of people annually. The majority involve vehicles trying to beat the gate, misjudging the train's speed, or ignoring the sound of the approaching train.
Key Facts
- 1
Red light at railway crossing = stop, even if the gate is not yet closed.

- 4
Unmanned crossings: stop before crossing, look both ways, confirm no train visible or audible before crossing.
