Legal Source

CMVR Rule 116; MV Act Sec. 190

What the Law Says

CMVR Rule 116: Buses, minibuses, and other transport vehicles carrying passengers must carry a fire extinguisher of minimum 2 kg capacity (dry chemical powder type). Vehicles carrying dangerous goods must carry 2 extinguishers. The extinguisher must be securely mounted, accessible, and serviced annually.

💡 Why This Rule Exists

Vehicle fires from electrical short circuits, fuel leaks, or collisions can escalate from a small flame to a fully engulfed vehicle in 2–3 minutes. A fire extinguisher used in the first 30 seconds can prevent total loss. Bus fires in India have caused mass casualties when no extinguisher was available and passengers could not escape in time.

Key Facts
