Commercial Driving Licence Requirements
Driving a commercial vehicle requires a separate commercial DL with additional tests and age requirements.
To drive any vehicle for hire or reward, you need a commercial driving licence (CDL). The minimum age is 18 for light transport and 20 for heavy transport (trucks, buses). A CDL requires passing additional tests including a driving test with a heavy vehicle.
Penalty Under Law
Driving commercial vehicle without CDL: ₹5,000 (Sec. 3/181). Employer who permits it: ₹5,000 + up to 3 months imprisonment (Sec. 180).

What the Law Says
Section 3 MV Act: No person shall drive a transport vehicle unless they hold a valid transport driving licence. Section 4: Minimum age for LTV transport: 18. Heavy Transport Vehicle (HTV): 20 years with at least 1 year of LTV licence. Section 9: CDL applicants must pass Class 8 education, a medical fitness test, and a practical driving test with the relevant vehicle class.
💡 Why This Rule Exists
Commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, tankers) are larger, heavier, and carry more risk than private vehicles. A truck driver covers 200–300 km daily and often drives at night. The additional licensing requirements ensure drivers have the skill and physical fitness to operate these vehicles safely. Despite these rules, enforcement gaps mean many truck drivers operate with forged or expired licences.
