Toll Ahead Sign

Shape: Rectangle or square  ·  Colour: Blue background

A toll collection point is ahead. Prepare to stop or use FASTag.

What It Means

India's NHAI expressways and national highways are largely tolled. Since January 2021, FASTag is mandatory for all four-wheelers on Indian highways. FASTag is an RFID-based system that allows automatic toll deduction without stopping at dedicated FASTag lanes. Without FASTag, you must pay double the toll charge. Approaching a toll at highway speed and braking hard for it has caused multiple rear-end collisions in India.

📍 Where You'll See It

On national highways and expressways, typically 1–2 km before toll plazas.

What You Must Do

Begin reducing speed. Ensure FASTag lane balance is sufficient. Move to your correct lane (FASTag vs cash) well in advance. Approach at 10–20 km/h through the toll.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Assuming the FASTag will work even with zero balance — toll barrier does not open, causing an obstruction. Top up FASTag before long trips.

⚖️ Legal Note

Passing a toll without payment: National Highways Fee Rules 2008. Penalty: double the toll fee + possible vehicle impoundment for repeat offence.
