Safe Overtaking Rules
The most dangerous manoeuvre on the road done casually millions of times a day
Overtaking is the most complex manoeuvre in everyday driving. It requires accurate judgement of your speed, the target vehicle's speed, oncoming traffic speed, available road length, and your vehicle's acceleration capability โ all simultaneously. Get any of these wrong and the result can be a head-on collision.
Why This Matters
Improper overtaking is consistently ranked among the top three causes of road accidents and road fatalities in India. The reason is simple: overtaking involves being on the wrong side of the road, approaching oncoming traffic head-on. There is zero margin for error. Misjudging the closing speed of an oncoming vehicle by even a few km/h can turn a safe overtake into a fatal head-on collision.
When You Must Not Overtake
Never overtake on or near a bend โ you cannot see oncoming traffic. Never overtake at a crest (hill top) โ you cannot see what is descending. Never overtake near a pedestrian crossing. Never overtake when there is a continuous (unbroken) white or yellow centre line โ this marking means the road ahead is dangerous. Never overtake when the vehicle ahead is signalling to turn right. Never overtake an emergency vehicle with lights/siren active.
The Three-Second Decision
Before overtaking, you must assess: the length of clear road you need (your vehicle length + overtaken vehicle length + safety gaps + distance covered by oncoming traffic during your manoeuvre), your vehicle's acceleration from current speed, the speed of the vehicle you are overtaking, and the closing speed of oncoming traffic. At a combined closing speed of 160 km/h (you at 80, oncoming at 80), a 200-metre gap disappears in 4.5 seconds. Most vehicles need 4+ seconds to complete an overtake.
Truck and Bus Overtaking
Heavy vehicles have large blind spots on both sides, especially the right side where the driver is furthest from you. Do not linger alongside a truck โ either complete the overtake quickly or drop back. Trucks cannot brake as quickly as cars; if you cut back in too early after overtaking, the truck cannot stop in time. Signal your intention, overtake briskly, and ensure at least 50 metres of gap before cutting in.
Being Overtaken Safely
When another vehicle overtakes you, your job is to make it as safe as possible for both of you. Slow down slightly to reduce the time they spend on the wrong side. Maintain your position โ do not accelerate. If you see oncoming traffic, flash your headlights to warn the overtaking driver. Do not use your horn to indicate displeasure at being overtaken โ it may cause the driver to make a dangerous decision.
