Section 193 — Punishment of agents and canvassers without proper authority

Punishment of agents and canvassers without proper authority.—Whoever engages himself as an agent or canvasser in contravention of the provisions of section 93 or of any rules made thereunder shall be punishable for the first offence with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees and for any second or subsequent offence with imprisonment which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to two thousand rupees, or with both.

(ZD) In section 193,— (i) in sub-section (1), for the words “for the first offence with fine”, the words “for the first offence with penalty” shall be substituted; (ii) in sub-section (2), for the words “punishable with fine”, the words “liable for a penalty” shall be substituted; (iii) in sub-section (3), for the words “punishable with fine of five thousand rupees” , the words “liable for penalty which shall not be less than fifty thousand rupees but may extend to one lakh rupees” shall be substituted.
Amending instruction from the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026 (No. 8 of 2026), Schedule entry 51, quoted verbatim. It took effect for the Motor Vehicles Act on 15 August 2026 under S.O. 4100(E), 24 July 2026. Where it conflicts with the text above, this later change prevails.
